  • How to fight wrinkles naturally and gently

    Équipe éditoriale

Wrinkles are best fought naturally through a short and consistent routine, rather than by accumulating products. Natural skincare can primarily provide gentle cleansing, attentive hydration, daily sun protection, and habits that preserve the skin barrier. Some home remedies, however, are best avoided.

What can you expect from natural skincare against wrinkles?

A wrinkle tells the story of time passing, but also of years of sun exposure, facial expressions, and more or less serene days. Understanding this helps you choose the right actions and expect from each what it can truly offer, without aiming for frozen skin.

Understanding the appearance of facial wrinkles

The appearance of wrinkles is due to the natural aging of the skin and the cumulative effect of ultraviolet rays. With age, collagen, elastin, and the dermis matrix reorganize: the skin loses density and firmness. Ultraviolet rays add oxidative stress that degrades collagen, a process known as photo-aging.

Expression lines form when you smile or frown, then become marked over time around the eyes and create forehead wrinkles. Skin renewal also slows down, and the skin retains water less effectively. Dehydration can then make fine lines more visible.

    Visible effects, without erasing aging

When better hydrated, the skin looks more supple and less marked, but the structure of the dermis is not repaired for all that. Skincare and lifestyle habits can therefore help to attenuate wrinkles on the surface and prevent some of the aging caused by external factors. Natural aging, however, continues.

    • Dehydration fine lines: a moisturizing treatment can visually blur them.
    • Deep wrinkles: a surface improvement does not make them disappear.
    • Photo-aging: photoprotection relies on more direct evidence than home recipes or a particular diet.

No single natural ingredient is enough to fight all types of wrinkles. Reducing the appearance of wrinkles relies instead on simple actions, repeated with consistency.

What gentle routine should you adopt against wrinkles?

Sensitive skin marked by wrinkles first requires tolerance. The routine consists of three steps: clean, hydrate, protect. A targeted treatment can be added when the skin tolerates it well.

Cleanse without weakening the skin barrier

Cleansing removes what has settled on the skin, without affecting wrinkles. Its gentleness protects the skin barrier, the superficial layer that retains water and limits external aggression.

    • In the morning: a very gentle cleanse or a simple rinse may suffice, depending on your skin's tolerance.
    • In the evening: a gentle cleanser removes makeup and sun protection.
    • Lukewarm water: prefer it over very hot water, and dry your face without rubbing.
    • Abrasive scrubs: limit them on sensitive skin.

A cleanser does not need to lather much to be effective. If your skin does not feel tight after rinsing, it is suitable for you.

Hydrate to soften and smooth appearance

Once the skin is clean, hydration takes over. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants: they attract water to the superficial layers. A good cream often combines them with emollients, which soften the skin, and components that support the skin barrier.

A small controlled study of 24 people with dry skin tested a ceramide cream. Hydration improved from the first application, and further after 28 days of twice-daily use, with certain texture and wrinkle parameters. Shea butter and vegetable oils soften the skin well, but an oil alone does not replace a suitable moisturizer.

Add a targeted active ingredient based on tolerance

Targeted skincare remains an optional step, between cleansing and hydration. Introduce only one new product at a time: in case of irritation, you will know which one caused it. Among anti-aging treatments, vitamin C was studied in a 2023 systematic review, which included only 7 publications and 139 volunteers. The results suggest an improvement in the appearance of wrinkles, to be confirmed by longer studies.

A 12-week randomized trial on 44 people compared 0.5% bakuchiol, applied twice a day, to 0.5% retinol, applied once a day. Both reduced the measured wrinkle surface, with no statistical difference between them. Retinol caused more scaling and stinging, which does not guarantee that bakuchiol is suitable for all skin types.

Tretinoin, available by prescription in France, is based on stronger evidence than cosmetic retinol. Retinoids can irritate: the French Society of Dermatology recommends not applying them to the eye contour, unless otherwise advised by a doctor. Active ingredients such as bakuchiol or hyaluronic acid are detailed in the guide to naturally derived anti-wrinkle active ingredients, which also presents useful natural ingredients for your routine.

How to protect the skin from photo-aging?

Among the steps to avoid environmental wrinkles, sun protection is backed by the strongest evidence. It accompanies skin aging without stopping it, and limits the portion caused by ultraviolet rays.

Make sun protection a daily habit

UVA rays contribute to premature skin aging and are present all year round, even on cloudy days, according to the DGCCRF. A randomized trial followed 903 adults under 55 for 4.5 years. Skin aging progressed 24% more slowly in those who applied sun protection daily, without this result predicting the effect for any given person.

European expert recommendations advise daily photoprotection balanced against UVA and UVB, generally with an SPF of at least 30. This habit complements other precautions and does not justify staying in the sun for longer periods.

    Choose and apply suitable protection

Choose protection that covers both UVA and UVB, with an SPF suited to your exposure and a pleasant texture: you will find it easier to apply in sufficient quantity. According to the ANSM, UVA protection must reach at least one-third of the displayed SPF. The critical wavelength must also reach at least 360 nm.

The ANSM reminds us that an insufficient quantity significantly reduces protection, and that it must be renewed after swimming, wiping, or sweating. Cover the face, ears, neck, décolleté, and the back of your hands. Shade, avoiding peak hours, clothing, a hat, and glasses complement the product.

    The Devoghe® approach

    Protect last, every morning

After cleansing and hydration, finish with sun protection, all year round, even on cloudy days: UVA rays are present in every season.

Which natural habits help without irritating the skin?

Natural solutions are not limited to bottles: lifestyle also counts. Some practices support the skin, others are primarily for comfort, and some recipes risk irritating it.

Support the skin through lifestyle habits

Regular sleep, sufficient hydration, and stress management can support skin comfort. Devoghe® notably suggests yoga and mindful breathing. Emotions can affect skin balance without being a systematic cause of wrinkles.

    • Tobacco: a 2021 meta-analysis associates current smoking with more wrinkles, with an odds ratio of 3.21. The 95% confidence interval ranges from 1.56 to 6.58, without translating into years of aging.
    • Rest: a study on 60 women associates 7 to 9 hours of good sleep with 30% better barrier recovery after 72 hours, compared to 5 hours or less of poor sleep.
    • Diet: fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and oily fish provide antioxidants or omega-3s, with less solid evidence than for sun protection.
    • Oral collagen: a 2025 meta-analysis covering 23 trials and 1,474 participants no longer shows benefits in high-quality trials.

The authors of this 2025 meta-analysis deem the evidence insufficient to recommend oral collagen. Similarly, the sleep study does not show that sleeping more makes wrinkles disappear.

Keep masks and massages in their proper place

Honey retains water, but no clinical data shows that a honey mask reduces wrinkles. This mask, like an oil mask, primarily provides temporary comfort and suppleness.

A facial massage pleasantly accompanies the application of a skincare product and offers a true moment of relaxation. However, there is no proof that it erases wrinkles.

    Avoid irritating recipes

Some kitchen remedies can mistreat the skin. Baking soda is alkaline, whereas the stratum corneum generally has a pH between 4.1 and 5.8 depending on the area. No credible clinical evidence shows that it erases wrinkles.

On sensitive skin, it is also better to avoid lemon, vinegar, alcohol, and essential oil blends, which risk irritating it. According to the ANSM, certain plant extracts and essential oils can also cause reactions in the sun, called photosensitization.

    Key takeaways

    • A short and consistent routine matters more than the accumulation of products.
    • Daily sun protection is the action backed by the most solid evidence.
    • Sleep, hydration, and stress management support the skin; some home recipes should be avoided.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How to take care of fine lines around the eyes?

This very thin skin quickly shows fine lines related to age or dehydration. Gently apply a suitable moisturizing treatment without pulling or rubbing, and protect the area from the sun. These actions can help limit the visibility of small fine lines without erasing established wrinkles. Devoghe® recommends avoiding this area with oily serums intended for the face.

Is a naturally derived anti-wrinkle treatment necessarily safer for the skin?

No. In the European Union, natural and non-natural cosmetics follow the same principles of safety and claim substantiation. Devoghe® recommends caution with essential oils on sensitive skin, as they are not suitable for all profiles.

Can sleeping position mark the face?

Pillow creases can mark the skin over time. Devoghe® advises sleeping on your back to limit them.
